The ancient Greek poet Hesiod described women as “the beautiful evil”, necessary to propagate the species, and yet the source of destruction. Civilised as we like to think we are, sometimes it seems that, as a society, we haven’t yet quite moved past this idea. I am an erstwhile classicist, a feminist and an ancient historian interested in early Christianity, and I’m fascinated by how classical ideas and modern ideologies, both political and religious, interact.
